The Katchatheevu Islands: An Electoral Catalyst

The fate of the Katchatheevu Islands remains uncertain amidst the dispute between India and Sri Lanka, centered over the sovereignty of this strategically positioned islet in the Bay of Bengal. In 1974, during the tenure of Indira Gandhi, the ‘Sirimavo-Gandhi Pact’ was put forth, which outlined specific boundaries over which each government would exert jurisdiction. Furthermore, provisions were included to allow Indian fishermen and pilgrims to access the island without the need for travel documents.

Recently, the issue has resurfaced in India’s political landscape, seen through the BJP’s demands condemning actions taken by the Sri Lankan authorities against Indian fishermen in the region, making it a part of their electoral campaign in Tamil Nadu (TN). A Right To Information (RTI) petition had been filed by BJP leader K Annamalai for clarifications, which included their concerns about national security and India’s diplomacy in the Bay of Bengal region.

The issue has now attracted national attention due to the allegations of the islet being “given away” by the Indian National Congress and DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) to Sri Lanka during the 1970s, emphasizing its impact on the livelihood and economic stability of farmers and their communities.

The shift in DMK’s stance on this issue, being at the forefront of the fisherman’s demands in current times, while agreeing with the government during the 1974 decision, raises questions about their position as the ruling party of TN. BJP’s efforts to bring this issue to light have garnered both praise and criticism due to its electoral nature of rallying the voters in their favor.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s response has been dismissive, with Foreign Minister Ali Sabry asserting that there is no need for reopening talks on an issue that has already been “resolved.”

Given India’s commitment to fostering Asian solidarity, this issue delves into deeper geopolitical complexities and serves as a test for the enduring relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
